SEAFDEC received the Margarita Lizárraga Medal Award for the biennium 2006-2007

SEAFDEC has been recognized by the ASEAN and the Member Countries as the prime mover in the promotion of sustainable and responsible fisheries in the region. Its activities through the regionalization of the CCRF covering a wide range of sub-sectors such as fishing technology and practices, aquaculture, post-harvest technology and trade, and fisheries management, have been greatly considered by the Member Countries as framework for there respective efforts in promoting sustainable fisheries resulting in positive change of attitudes among the stakeholders which led to the advancement of responsible fisheries based on the CCRF framework in the region.

On 17 November 2007, SEAFDEC by Dr. Siri Ekmaharaj, Secretary-General was awarded the Margarita Lizárraga Medal Award for the biennium 2006-2007 at the 34th Session of the FAO Conference for the efforts in promoting the CCRF in Southeast Asia. This is considered a milestone in the history of SEAFDEC for having its efforts and achievements in promoting responsible fisheries in the region during the past decade globally recognized. SEAFDEC participated in the 29th AMAF Meeting

The Secretary-General, Dr. Siri Ekmaharaj, and senior officials of SEAFDEC participated as observers in the 29th Meeting of the ASEAN Ministers on Agriculture and Forestry (AMAF) organized from 29 October to 2 November 2007 in Bangkok, Thailand. During Meeting, Dr. Siri reported to the ASEAN Ministers of the good progress made in ASEAN-SEAFDEC cooperation since the 28th AMAF Meeting.

While expressing their strong support for ASEAN-SEAFDEC cooperation and their appreciation to SEAFDEC for her assistance to ASEAN in several fisheries program, the Ministers endorsed the Letter of Understanding on the ASEAN-SEAFDEC Strategic Partnership (LOU/ASSP) for signing by the Secretary-General of ASEAN H.E. Mr. Ong Keng Yong and the Secretary-General of SEAFDEC; and the public signing ceremony between ASEAN and SEAFDEC for the LOU/ASSP was carried out on the 2 November during the 29th AMAF Meeting.

The ASSP is envisaged to enhance the overall ASEAN-SEAFDEC collaboration in the fisheries sector. It was agreed that the existing ASEAN-SEAFDEC Fisheries Consultative Group (FCG) would be the mechanism for ASEAN and SEAFDEC to consult, deliberate and agree on the ASEAN-SEAFDEC fisheries programs/activities and policies to be placed under the ASSP. In addition, under the ASSP framework, SEAFDEC in collaboration with DOF Thailand and with funding support from the SEAFDEC-Sida project plans to organize two ASEAN-SEAFDEC workshops. The first workshop is the “Regional Consultation and Workshop on the Concept for the establishment of an ASEAN Fisheries Development and Management Mechanism” in Bangkok, Thailand from 6-8 Nov 2007. The second workshop is the “Regional Workshop on Implementing the ASEAN Roadmap for the Integration of the Fisheries Sector” to be held in Bangkok, Thailand from 14 – 17 January 2008.

Responsible Fisheries

Over the past four decades, SEAFDEC has been assisting Member Countries in developing their fisheries potentials towards sustainable directions, taking into consideration relevant global concerns and initiatives.

With the adoption on the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries by the FAO members in 1995, responsible approach has been immensely taken up by SEAFDEC, with the essence of the CCRF being embedded in planning and implementation of activities.
